Reasons to Love Golf

There are plenty of reasons to love golf in Northern California. With giant redwoods lining the fairways, the best Alister MacKenzie course you’ve never played is northwood golf club’s nine-holer along the Russian River. The seventh hole at Pebble Beach is a beauty or a beast. Play a sand wedge or 3-iron depending on the direction of the wind. Down the road a bit, Pacific Grove Golf Course sports a gazillion dollar ocean view and a green fee about one tenth of Pebble Beach. San Francisco’s Presidio Golf Course survived the 1906 earthquake and was home course to president Teddy Roosevelt. You can tee it up on the ocean at the links at Bodega Harbour at dawn and tap in at sunset in the mountains at Old Greenwood in Truckee. Unlike Caddyshack’s Carl Spackler, a good superintendent goes unnoticed working behind the scenes. Green thumbs up. There is a lot to love about golf and as columnist Thomas Boswell wrote, “when you fall in love with golf, you seldom fall easy. It’s obsession at first sight.”
